As people age, they may find that their eyes do not adapt to distances as they once did. When people reach around the age of 40, the lens of the eye begins to lose its flexibility, making it difficult to focus on close objects. This condition is known as presbyopia. It can be largely managed through the use of bifocal lenses.
Bifocal (also referred to as multifocal) eyeglass lenses contain two or more lens powers, helping you see objects at all distances after you have lost the natural ability to change the focus of your eyes due to aging.
The lower portion of a bifocal lens contains the near segment, which is used for reading and other close-up tasks. The rest of the lens is typically corrected for distance vision, but sometimes it has no correction at all if you already have good distance vision.

This condition is called presbyopia, and it can be largely managed with the use of bifocals.
